Wednesday Wildcard: Home Decor Do or Don't?!

9/1/2010

OK I admit it...I spend way too many hours of my day just sitting at my desk staring at a computer, or hunched over my phone answering calls for hours on end all day!  Now I'm not a physical therapist, but I still know that it can't be good for my body to be seated and inactive for so many hours at a time...

But we all have to work, right?  So what do you do about the dilemma of staying active and keeping your posture in line, while also getting your desk job done to pay the bills each month?  Well one of my co-workers recently took matters into his own hands, and ordered a chair for his desk that is going to require him to improve his posture and engage his core, all while putting in a good day's work.  Here's a look at his new snazzy office chair:

No you aren't dreaming...this is your typical balance ball that you would use for Pilates or sit ups at the gym.  The model featured here is by the company Gaiam, and it is called the Balance Ball Chair.  It is priced at $80 and you can find it at retailers like Amazon or Target.  This chair is multifunctional because it serves as an everyday chair, helps you to improve your core and posture, and the chair comes with a booklet of exercises and stretches that you can also take advantage of to break up the day with a little exercise break at your desk!

This is what Gaiam says about this unique chair on their website, "It's revolutionary in that it offers health and fitness benefits while you sit at home or the office. The patented design combines comfort and ergonomic back support, all at an affordable price.  With chiropractic pioneer Dr. Randy Weinzoff, Gaiam developed the BalanceBall Chair as an effective tool for strengthening core muscles and improving spinal alignment. Removable 52cm BalanceBall can be used for exercises on or off the chair."

What do you think?  Would you purchase a chair like this?  Considering the price of most chairs and gym memberships these days, I would say that this chair is a steal!

I have even considered getting this chair to go with the new vanity I just bought from West Elm.  Here's a peak:

Although I love the idea of engaging my core while I blow dry my hair, I just don't think I can sacrifice the design of my bedroom by having this chair at my vanity.  I love it for my back, but for now I think it is much better suited in a gym than my bedroom!  And as for the vanity, I was thinking of going more in this direction...

Like this gorgeous blue and white print X Bench by Jonathan Adler!  The design and fabric (Aegean Sea) of this bench are exquisite, and it would look amazing in my blue and white accented bedroom!

So what do you think?  Would you consider buying a chair like this for your office or home?  Could you give up design for function in this instance?  As much as I would love a flatter tummy, I still think I'm going to have to go with design on this one!

I like the "idea" of that chair, lord knows I need it! But I don't think I could handle that all day!! I REALLY LOVE the JA X-bench. It is beautiful! I think I know which one I'd pick...

I am running out to get that chair. What a great price and so much cheaper than a personal trainer. Too bad my boss won't let me put it at my desk. I just asked, right after I did some cyber searching for Frette sheets. Love this website!

I'm with Loucinda - nice concept but I couldn't do it though. We have a few great ergonomic chairs and my husband now wants the Aeron chair from Herman Miller. He has a bad back so the expense is worth it.

I LOVE that bench!

I have heard of people simply bringing in exercise balls to sit on too! I wonder how it feels after 7 or 8 hours of sitting on it - I am not sure I could handle it all day every day! And the JA bench is super cute - you should absolutely go with that one! :)

It sounds so compelling, but outside of a gym...I just can't see it! LOVE the bench you are considering, and the vanity you just purchased is perfect!

Thank you for the feedback ladies! I am in total agreement with you...my back and stomach might thank me later if I bought this balance ball chair, but I just could never do it! The Xbench is a little out of my reach right now, but a girl can dream! I will keep you posted on what chair I do take home for my new vanity!
